Corporate Dyslexia

As suggested by a friend I went to see Tare Zameen Pe (TZP) in a theatre. At first I was a bit apprehensive about the movie but then as the movie progressed, I started realizing what an awesome thing just happened to me. I came out of the theater completely awestruck by the work of Mr. Amir Khan. I just could not believe that Indian cinema could be used in such a powerful manner to influence the masses, to send out a message across. Something that which our country requires the most at this stage, where it’s struggling so hard to make its presence felt on the world map.

When the country is struggling so hard obviously the corporate world too would make a big difference to it, I guess majority would agree with me. While pondering over the movie for a very long time, I realized is that really happening? Is the corporate world really making that kind of a mark? In some cases yes it is? That’s when I realized what’s happening in that world………something none other than The Corporate Dyslexia.

A lot of companies today do not realize the real worth of the candidates they recruit; their talents are not utilized to the utmost. The candidates are promised a Job Profile while they are being summoned for the post. With high hopes the candidate prepares himself to the very best of his capabilities only to realize that upon joining he is not doing what he was promised…… isn’t this unfair…….isn’t this a waste of his capabilities.

Just as Ishan’s painting capabilities were curbed by his parents to be a part of the rat race same is the case with the companies. In the quest to be number one in this war the real talent is suppressed and overlooked. A case of a Dyslexic Employee.

A ray hope is still kept alive in this, just as Nikumb did in TZP, yes we do have several Nikumbs in this real world who are here to cure this Corporate Dyslexia. Let’s take for instance Mr. Anil Dhirubhai Ambani, who is venturing into a lot of verticals and picking a lot of fresh talents and giving them a fair chance to showcase their talents. A good platform for the candidates. Also if we take the case of Mr. Ratan Tata, he also believes in training and grooming their employees for the top level. This ways the internal employees are given a fair chance and the cases of complex’s, of any kind, are done with.

Moreover, a lot of companies have come up with the 15% Rule. That says every employee can devote 15% of his working time to the activity/project of his interest, a Win-Win situation for both the employee and the organization. This obviously comes with certain restrictions, but on a positive note the employee is given a chance to come up with something new and creative. Who knows the work of the employee could be the face of the organization just as Ishan’s painting was the face of the school magazine????? A good food for thought isn’t it????

A movie that sure tantalizes your nerves, forces one to think and a movie that should not go unnoticed by at least the youth of today, who are the future of the nation. I had gone for the movie with a couple of friends who all had their apprehensions about watching it. One thought its worth for just kids and one took a good, nice nap half way through the movie. Surely such a fine peace of work does not deserve a treatment like that and especially by those who claim to make a difference.

I seriously would beg to differ with the great artist Mr. Shah Rukh Khan who feels the films are for entertainment and messages are for post office. I happen to be a huge fan of Mr. Shah Rukh Khan but, I would like to say that what better medium than cinemas, in our land to send a message across to the masses which still has a lot of population that cannot read or write!!!!!!!! Its time we wake up and make way for meaningful cinema……......

I would like to thank my friend Mr. Harish Raj Shetty, who inspired me to write about the topic and gave words to my thoughts.

good job done !!! well the author has very nicely correlated TZP with the corporate world. The meaning as taken from dictionary.com says :
dyslexia [disˈleksiə]
a difficulty with reading or writing that some people have because they are unable to see words as meaningful shapes or the differences between letters..

Being dyslixic is a disadvantage to you. The corporate dyslexia as the author points out is hampering the comapny and the individual in way that if the person is given desired and promised profile the company can benefit more...Agreed !!!

The managers are basically a problem solver and sometimes a need may arise that you may be called to handle a job you are not hired for , or say the company at a later stage thinks that you are not performing as per the expectations in the profile u were hired and you fit in the other role in a better way. If in that case they allot you different profile which is advantageous to you and the company ..will u still call it a dyslexia ??
Sometimes the employee themselves not know where they fit well. Just because they like something doesn't mean they can perform it best..Isn't the top level company people who has the experience and skill to judge you better can judge you better than the person who came to hire you ??
I believe that the corporate dislexiya arises due to the failure of the recruitment team.

good article anu,
i hope to read more from you in future.
looking forward to the response !!

Hey naval, I guess u did not get my point. I termed Corporate Dyslexia to a situation when a NEW EMPLOYEE does not get what he is promised and I have mentioned that very clearly in the article.
To what you said that managers are the problem solvers.......I completely agree to what you are saying. Indeed they are, that’s why they are managers. Isn't it???? Why else would they be doing that job or else????
What I mean to say through this is, that it is not fair to put any candidate in a profile that which he was not promised. He should be given a fair chance to showcase his talents in that field.
To what you said that he is put in the place where he is best suited by the company, I agree with this too completely. That’s why the companies have come up with the 15% rule. Something which I have again mentioned in the post. This rule enables the employee to carry on with his area of interest too which might sometime, who knows benefit the organization......I hope I made myself clear this time?

Guys TZP received standing ovations all across north America. Its the biggest bollywood grosser beating Chak de. Its a shame tht TZP is applauded more overseas than in our own nation.

Chef par excellence, fledgling management guru and now promising writer...just how many hats will you don lady?
But I agree with you on the corporate thing, though I'm not entirely comfortable using the term dyslexia in this context. Guess that's one reason why entrepreneurs and the SMB sector are doing so well.
Write more often...
